Orthodontic treatment can improve your appearance, boost self-esteem, and even enhance your quality of life. You’d jump at the chance to provide these benefits for your child, so why not for yourself? Whether in your career or your personal life, a healthy, beautiful smile impacts the way you act and feel; your confidence will clear the way for your personality to shine front and center.

Beyond looking amazing, straight teeth and a properly aligned bite offer lifelong health benefits. Straight teeth are easier to keep clean, reducing the risk of tooth decay, gum disease, and bad breath. A healthy smile also helps prevent bone and gum loss while protecting tooth enamel from excessive wear. A proper bite can alleviate chronic headaches, reduce jaw (TMJ/TMD) pain, and even improve your speech.

You’re in the driver’s seat.

Considering your hopes and needs for orthodontic treatment, see where you fit on the MKY Smile Scale.

Reasons to Get Orthodontic Treatment as an Adult

Send your confidence soaring.
Your smile is one of the first things people notice about you. Who wouldn’t want to bump up the success of first impressions? Many adults are hesitant to show their smiles if their teeth are crooked—that needn’t be you.
Picturing having a mouthful of metal brackets and wires is enough to discourage many adults from enhancing their smile and bite. Know that so many more adults now than ever before wear braces; you’ll certainly not be alone. But you have other choices! We specialize in serving our adult patients with Invisalign clear aligners so you get the best of both worlds: fast and effective treatment with a seamless, clean look.
Crooked teeth result in spaces where food gets trapped easily, leading to a buildup of plaque. Often people develop pockets near their gum tissue that collect food. Exacerbating the whole problem is that brushing and flossing are harder and more frustrating. It’s a perfect storm for tooth decay, gum disease, bad breath, and enamel deterioration. Dental cleanings are much more laborious for misaligned teeth. When you improve your smile, your oral hygiene becomes a snap.
A poorly aligned bite can cause painful TMJ symptoms, headaches, back pain, and other debilitating issues. Bad bites can quickly wear down your tooth enamel, which you can’t repair.
Life expectancy in the U.S. continues to rise, which means your teeth might have decades more work to do than they might have had in earlier generations. Well-aligned teeth and a healthy bite ensure your teeth will stay in great working condition as you mature.

Kelsey had braces decades ago but didn’t keep up with wearing her retainer. As she approached her wedding, she wanted to get back to the orthodontist to get her smile picture-perfect. “I have had the best experience at this orthodontist!” Kelsey said. She chose Invisalign and couldn’t be happier that she did: “Everyone in the office was exceptional. They made my experience quick and flexible but with full quality. I love the results and would recommend them to anyone and everyone!”

Jennifer loved working with the MKY team during her Invisalign treatment: “The entire team has been nothing but superb right from my consultation up until now. I love how pleasant they are with everyone.” Working with our doctors was especially positive for Jennifer: “Dr. Kaye and Yucha made sure everything was perfect and continued to encourage me. I love my smile!!! I most definitely would recommend MKY Orthodontics to friends and family.”

Sandra originally game to MKY Orthodontics so her son could get braces. After seeing his wonderful experience, she decided to get Invisalign clear aligners for herself plus an appliance to help her manage sleep apnea. “MKY are the best around,” Sandra commented. “They’re friendly, caring, and create a comfortable environment.” From her experience, she highlighted MKY’s excellent treatment and quality of care. “I wouldn’t go anywhere else.”

“Love the doctors here and recommend this practice to adults and kids both. I even got Invisalign® here myself while both my kids were in treatment!” – Dawn L.

Adult Orthodontic FAQs

I had straight teeth when I was younger and now I don’t. What happened?
Your jaw and mouth naturally change shape as you age. When your body gets older, your jawbone loses density, which can make your teeth shift. You might have thought there was nothing to be done, but now you can see you have many options to correct your smile.
Absolutely not! Teeth position can be adjusted at any age—even adults in their 60s and 70s have successful orthodontic treatment. We often meet patients who think they’ve missed their chance to have a great smile, and we’re here to tell you that’s not the case. You matter. Give this gift to yourself.

The main difference is that adults’ jaws are fully grown. Adult treatment may take slightly longer than treatment for kids or teens with a similar problem because adults’ bones are mature and have a different density. It’s very common for orthodontists to coordinate with an adult’s dentist to reach their best outcome.

Adults often choose Invisalign clear aligners to enhance their smiles since they feel less self-conscious with this nearly invisible treatment. We treat hundreds of adult patients every year with Invisalign, so we have the expertise to make your dream smile come true.

  • Overcrowding: Teeth overlap because the size and number of teeth exceed the capacity of the underlying bone structure.
  • Overbite: The upper front teeth significantly overlap the bottom front teeth when the jaw is closed.
  • Underbite: The lower jaw sits farther out than the upper jaw.
  • Protruding teeth: Teeth stick out farther than looks natural and seamless.
  • Open bite: The jaws are misaligned such that the upper and lower teeth don’t touch.
  • Jaw pain: Pain caused by a bad bite, teeth grinding, stress, or mouth trauma.
  • Abnormal tooth decay or wear and tear: All teeth wear naturally as we age, but poorly aligned teeth wear unevenly and more quickly than teeth that are straight.
  • Gum disease: A chronic infection of the gums because of plaque buildup.

The best toothbrush is the one you happily use every day. When you have orthodontic appliances, it’s important you brush after every meal and snack so no food gets caught in your appliance. Be sure to change the toothbrush or brush head at the first sign of wear or at least every three months.

Orthodontic treatment is designed to ensure that all the teeth in your mouth work together well so they wear better over your lifetime. Teeth, like gears on a bicycle, must dovetail seamlessly to avoid excessive wear. That means an optimal orthodontic outcome most often requires treatment of both the top and bottom teeth, however we evaluate each case individually and sometimes just lower treatment can be performed.

First of all, congratulations! Pregnancy brings on many changes in the body, of which some can affect the mouth. Soft tissues like gums can be more susceptible to infection. We will discuss how these risk factors can affect your orthodontic treatment and when the appropriate time to begin treatment is at your initial consultation.
